What the research measured
The cited meta-analysis of more than 100 uniform trials reported head blight index reductions of 32% to 52% and DON reductions of 12% to 45% by triazole, with prothioconazole + tebuconazole highest for index (52%) and metconazole highest for DON (45%). The 2022–25 uniform trials across 21 states reported 49% to 75% index control and 31% to 60% DON control across programs, with Miravis Ace at anthesis the most effective single application (66% index, 44% DON). Pennsylvania on-farm fields in 2023–25 yielded 4% to 24% more where treated.
A 14-state meta-analysis of uniform fungicide trials over 11 years, a 17-state network meta-analysis of strobilurin and triazole programs, the 2022–25 USWBSI uniform fungicide trials in 21 states and an 11-field Pennsylvania on-farm series.4 independent sources. What it is. A triazole (DMI) fungicide such as prothioconazole + tebuconazole, metconazole or a pydiflumetofen + propiconazole premix, sprayed at early anthesis (Feekes 10.5.1, about 50% of tillers with fresh anthers) to suppress Fusarium head blight and the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) in grain. Trial rates were 6.5 fl oz/A Prosaro, 13.5 Caramba, 13.7 Miravis Ace, 10.3 Prosaro Pro and 7.3 Sphaerex, each with a nonionic surfactant.
Study conditions and limitations
- Strobilurin (QoI) programs alone raised DON relative to the untreated check in the 17-state analysis, most of all when applied at Feekes 10.5; a Feekes 9 QoI followed by a Feekes 10.5.1 DMI only partly offset that and did not match DMI-alone efficacy.
- Two-pass programs did more: Miravis Ace at anthesis followed by Prosaro Pro or Sphaerex 4–6 days later cut index and DON a further 24 to 29% against Miravis Ace alone, and were the most effective programs tested; the trials do not report the cost of the second pass.
- The uniform trials used a susceptible cultivar, artificial inoculation and often mist irrigation; untreated plots ran from 0 to 50.2% index and 0 to 40.6 ppm DON, so percent control under natural infection can differ.
- Efficacy was 5 to 20% higher for index and 7 to 16% higher for DON in spring wheat than in soft winter wheat studies, depending on the fungicide.
- The newer premixes Prosaro Pro and Sphaerex performed about the same as Prosaro (2 to 4% more index control relative to Prosaro), and Caramba was the least effective single application relative to Prosaro in 2022–25.
- In the Pennsylvania on-farm fields the head blight index fell 4 to 19% and foliar disease 2 to 34%, but one low-disease farm (under 9% foliar severity) saw a negative disease reduction.

- Fusarium Head Blight Management Coordinated Project: Uniform Fungicide Trials 2022–2025. Efficacy of new fungicides for FHB and DON management in wheat ↗
Replicated trials in 21 states, 2022–25, on a susceptible cultivar: percent control ran from 49 to 75% for head blight index and 31 to 60% for DON across programs. Miravis Ace at anthesis gave the highest single-application control (66% index, 44% DON), 31% lower index and 17% lower DON than Prosaro; Miravis Ace followed by Prosaro Pro or Sphaerex 4–6 days later cut both a further 24–29%.
- Efficacy of triazole-based fungicides for Fusarium head blight and deoxynivalenol control in wheat: a multivariate meta-analysis ↗
Over 100 uniform trials across 11 years and 14 states: prothioconazole + tebuconazole cut head blight index 52%, metconazole 50%, prothioconazole 48%, tebuconazole 40% and propiconazole 32%. For DON, metconazole cut 45%, prothioconazole 43%, prothioconazole + tebuconazole 42%, tebuconazole 23% and propiconazole 12%.
- Meta-Analysis of the Effects of QoI and DMI Fungicide Combinations on Fusarium Head Blight and Deoxynivalenol in Wheat ↗
Network meta-analysis of trials in 17 states comparing four DMI-only programs at Feekes 10.5.1, five QoI-only programs at Feekes 9 to 10.5, three QoI + DMI mixtures and three QoI-then-DMI sequences. DMI at Feekes 10.5.1 was most effective against index and DON; QoI-only programs raised DON above the untreated check, especially at Feekes 10.5.
- Fungicide Efficacy for Fusarium Head Blight and Foliar Disease ↗
On-farm trials on five Pennsylvania farms (11 fields) in 2023–25 with Miravis Ace or Prosaro Pro at Feekes 10.5.1: head blight index fell 4 to 19% across farms, foliar disease severity 2 to 34%, and treated plots yielded 4 to 24% more (5 to 23 bu/ac). One low-disease farm showed a negative disease reduction.

- What disease pressure did the trials with a yield response have, and do my fields see it?
- What application timing and rate did the cited studies use?
- Is there a scouting threshold that would tell me whether to apply this season?
